The Farmer Takes A Wife

We spent this past weekend at our CSA farm where Papi officiated at our friend and farmer B.R.'s wedding. The town was charming, and Lucas had such a grand time the entire weekend and running freely on the open, muddy land that he didn't want to leave.

We had a good look at the many yummy veggies we'll be eating soon...

And unintentionally dressed Jesse to match the wedding party...

Lucas found the home-pressed apple cider at the reception:

Ahhh, that's good stuff...

Glass #2 of apple cider:

And glass #3:

Though it was bedtime, Lucas was so wired from the sugary goodness that he stayed awake the entire 2 1/2 hour car ride home, singing and hanging out and delightfully chatting away while Jesse slept next to us. He finally fell asleep at home around 10:30 p.m., a record for him.

Imagine if he had tried the hard cider that was served simultaneously. It's good to know he'd make a happy drunk.

6 Months

Happy Half Birthday, Jesse!

This is a common scene these days -- the backwards crawl that pins you into funny corners and situations that you can't easily escape until you finally cry out to us in distress:

Though I love fall, it means more layers. And the biggest reason I hate layers right now is because it means covering up those chubby arms and thick thighs that we've gotten to see and marvel at and chomp on all summer long.

Warmer weather clothing is also putting a cramp in your crawlin' style. I'm tempted to put some puffy paint on the knees of your pants to give you some traction in order to avoid the running on ice phenomenon that happens when you try to move but can only slip and slide.

But your biggest accomplishment of the month: teeth! Earlier this week I noticed two (!) little milk teeth just cutting through your bottom gums. Ouch! Just a few days later I can now feel their roughness against my finger. We get the hint... perhaps it's time to finally begin eating solid food?

Gracias

I probably ruined a holy moment by taking this picture while praying before dinner but I couldn't resist. We keep our prayer simple for an impatient toddler: "Gracias a dios por estos alimentos. A-men!" -- Thank you god for this food -- always followed by an emphatic "A-men!"

Though we don't normally clasp our hands or even really bow our heads or close our eyes, in order to first get the little ritual across to Lucas, we began with some exaggeration. And this is how Lucas has always mimicked our hand motions: by smacking the back of his wide-open hands against his forehead, sort of like he's making antlers on the front instead of the back. Then Papi and I make eye contact with each other and end up giggling EVERY time.

As part of our bedtime routine we repeat but with a slight variation: "Gracias a dios por este dia," thanking god for the day. Lately we've been expanding a bit, adding thanks for Papi, for Mami, for Jesse, and so on.

Last night Lucas beat me to the punch and added, "Y gracias por Maquin, gracias por Tata y Liam... Y gracias por cookies!"

Amen!

Jesse's Awake! Let's Go Get Him!

Lucas and I love, love, love to go and greet Jesse whenever we hear him waking up from a nap. Jesse is always his usual smiley self when we walk in, but I think he's also learned to expect us upon awakening. Lucas will even often ask me to go wake up Jesse, and after I give him the "Are You Kidding Me?" look I still often have to distract him with another toy/activity to hold him back.

These next two pictures are a bit wonky, but they catch the spirit of our waking baby. See the little square blue blankie that he's been cuddling with? (Works like magic!)

And then Lucas often likes to climb inside the co-sleeper while Jesse is lying there (or into the large crib during Jesse's diaper changes where the diaper changing "station" currently lives), though this time I already had Jesse propped up because I had just finished nursing him:

I love the milky drool in this one:

I also love that he's sleeping on top of the quilt sewn by Gretchen Larson-Wolbrink and under the blanket made by Diane Wendorf -- both gifts for baby Lucas from a while back ago. So much wonderful color to inspire sweet dreams!

Here are some more pictures from the same set as the previous post, taken at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens during Mema and Mempa's visit last week.

A 3-Year Old's Bliss

Okay, everyone. Gather round to learn some useless Thomas The Tank Engine trivia, and get comfy in your chair 'cause this epic post is almost as long as McCain's lying nose...

Well, we just couldn't resist treating our train-lovin' kid! Yesterday we drove a couple of hours to Strasburg, Pennsylvania to attend the Day Out With Thomas event in beautiful Dutch country. We ate whoopie pies and consumed more sugar in two days than we have all year, gawked shamefully at Amish folk, petted sheep and goats, waded in the baby pool, and...

Saw the "real" Thomas!

The first encounter:

Here's Lucas in the store that puked all things Thomas. You're seeing maybe 1/5 of the Thomas merchandise. If you've thought of it, they have it. If you haven't thought of it, they have it anyway. We found out later that this is the permanent Thomas merchandise store at the Strasburg Railroad. The traveling store that came with the event was under a huge tent and came with the exact merchandise we saw here plus endless aisles of clothing. Those people are genius, I tell ya'.

These electric train tracks were Lucas's favorites and even telling him that we had to hurry to board the Real Thomas did not easily convince him to want to leave. The town itself is loaded with train museums and gift shops (but don't tell that to Lucas).

Here's the Station Agent stopping by our window to chat while other passengers boarded the train. Can you tell that Lucas is ready to hand him the ticket? (The ticket taker passed through our car a bit later.)

Lucas would make a fine actor someday. His nature is generally serious and intense, but more importantly he's incredibly empathetic and sensitive, and his face is so expressive. Here we caught his reactions after he heard the "poop poop" from Thomas's whistle, then the "All aboard!" from the intercom, then the "chugga-chug" of the wheels turning. Priceless, don't you think?

Waving goodbye and enjoying the views:

Babies are such natural-born yogis, even while nursing! For the last couple of months Jesse has been in the habit of placing his top leg on my shoulder or doing all kinds of pilate-style movements while nursing. Check him out wearing the cute leg warmers that were gifted to him:

In the television series, Thomas generally pulls two cars named Annie and Clarabel. Annie is first and Clarabel is last. When boarding, Lucas steered us towards the car that would be Annie but she was full, so we moved on to the second car. Lucas was so proud to ride inside Clarabel ("Bara-bell").

After de-boarding the train, you're fed into another line where you can visit a person dressed up as Sir Topham Hatt, otherwise known in the early pre-politically correct days of Thomas as 'The Fat Controller.' Then you're fed into yet another line where you can pose with Thomas for a picture. Lucas was not happy about this; he wondered who the heck finally gets this close to Thomas and chooses to look away.

At the water tower where Thomas goes when he's thirsty, says Lucas:

In the end, a train is a train, whether or not it has a face on it or a name. Lucas is just happy to watch them go by. We did this for a long time.

The event provided several tents hosting all kinds of entertainment - music, tattoos, puzzles, mini rides, food, legos, and tracks for both playing and watching:

The End. When we arrived at home later that evening, I overheard Lucas say, "Papi, it was so hard to say good-bye to Thomas."

He-Hey!

Jesse is babbling non-stop these days.

He says: "ni-ni-ni-ni-ni" and "a-buh-luh, a-buh-luh", and my favorite "mah-mah-mah" (he's obviously not saying "Mama" but it's music to my ears nonetheless). We love it!

Birthday Party

So here's Lucas at his friend Mateo's birthday party last week doing birthday party stuff. (Jesse was busy being passed around the room and stealing the show with his massive, chubby self.)

What I wanted to point out most is the last picture, where I caught his facial expression just after they turned the lights back on and brought in the birthday cake. Lucas gasped in awe and then threw his hands over his mouth as the cake was presented to the birthday boy, and he held his breath as Mateo blew out the candles. Lucas was soooo happy for Mateo and wanted him to do it again and again!

That boy is nothing but genuine sweetness...
