Doodle Bug
I thought perhaps that doodling would be beyond Lucas at this age, but he gets it. Or at least knows that we write on paper, not on tables or the floor...
Right now he prefers the black crayon. Then after a few scratches, he likes to put the crayons back into the box, dump them out again, and start over.

Centerfold
We've had a great week! Lucas, of course, is in the throes of toddlerhood, pushing boundaries and experimenting constantly with new things. This past week he's tried walking backwards, has loved kicking balls instead of throwing, has attempted his first doodles with pen and paper, and has discovered the joy of intentionally dropping food onto the floor and walking back and forth across to see how it feels and sounds.
Lucas still loves to visit and explore Abuelo's room, which is intact for a few days longer until we can get rid of the furniture and return our apartment to semi-normalcy. One of his favorites is hiding in Abuelo's closet. Here he is showin' off his pecs, biceps, and love handles for us:

Little Shadow
When Abuelo lived with us, Lucas became accustomed to following him throughout his short morning routine, especially during face shaving. As soon as he heard the electric razor, Lucas would stop whatever it was he was doing to run to the bathroom. Abuelo would pretend to shave Lucas's face, then when he was finished splashing on aftershave, he'd swipe each of Lucas's cheeks as well so that the smell of Abuelo was with us all day long.
The tradition sort of continues. Lucas is starting to mimick us more, or at the very least is interesting in doing anything we're up to/sampling anything we have. Once the hairdryer turns on, Lucas shows up a second later to have his hair blown or to just be held by me while I finish. Minutes later while Papi takes a shower, Lucas loves to take a peak (somehow he's not always so excited about the water when it's his turn to bathe...). After drying himself off, Papi puts on deodorant, then puts on the cap and swipes each of Lucas's armpits.

Count Blue-cula
Here you see pictures of Lucas after two servings of dessert. When he saw me coming with a towel, he quickly grabbed the blankie and a paci for protection from any distasteful and completely unnecessary (as far as he is concerned) mouth, hand, and body wiping. In the first picture above you see sweet Lucas's initial approach to reacquiring said paci from his ever-so swift and sneaky Papi. That strategy having failed and a dreaded wiping impending, you see in the second picture his quick production of a second strategy. . . . . . . . . which has made us incredibly popular in pre-dawn Brooklyn.

Happy Valentine's Day
Though only a couple of blocks away, today it felt like we did some adventurous trekking through the snow and icy wind to get to Lucas's 15-month pediatrician visit. After those visits we usually feel like we all deserve a treat, so here's the special Valentine's meal we had for dinner tonight:
And here's Lucas giving his sign of approval:

Proud
This afternoon we attended our weekly Music Together class, and this time I'm proud to write that Lucas was paci- and blankie-free. I didn't even have to ask him to refrain from putting random instruments into his mouth! As usual, he had a great time running around and gettin' down to the music, but this time he didn't need to cling to me at the start while he warmed up to the whole idea. The closest I came to glimpsing Cautious Lucas was during a segment where the parents pull out a parachute and walk around, making it lift and drop and rotate while the little ones play and jump underneath. Lucas would laugh and point and babble, then a sudden look of seriousness would come across his face as he looked for me among the moving legs in front of him. I'd make sure that he could see me peeking through the fabric, then he'd smile and return to being goofy again. Way to go, Little Man!
All In A Morning's Work
Here's a look at a typical morning for us based on what's happened so far today:
6:00 a.m. - Lucas wakes up bright eyed and very perky -- too perky.
6:15 ish - Papi is the perky morning type, too, so off they go to the front of the apartment to do their thing while Mama continues snoozin'. I don't exactly know what happens here except that they have a clear routine that includes playing hard and eating breakfast. I sleep well, even though I sometimes hear little feet running and all kinds of silliness.
7:00 ish - I hear the drama of Lucas fighting a stinky diaper change in the room next door. I turn over and go back to sleeping.
7:30 a.m. - Like clockwork, I hear Lucas push the door open and come to my side to wake me up. Big, toothy smile and a hug, then pointing towards the door and some emphatic babble, probably telling me to come with him so that he can show me something.
7:45 a.m. - I'm often still in bed. Clearly I didn't follow, but Lucas doesn't seem to care or notice. I grab some breakfast while Papi tells me a few stories about their morning, then head for the shower quickly before Lucas sees me again.
8:00 ish - I hear Lucas knocking on the bathroom door and wanting to come in, then hear Papi telling him that Mama is in the shower and let's go do this-and-that over here. It's still early, which means Lucas is cooperative and doesn't protest long. Papi's distraction works, and they disappear until I'm finished.
8:30 a.m. - I'm finished getting ready and preparing stuff for the day, like Lucas's milk and food, putting stuff away, etc. It's time for Mama to take over so that Papi can get ready for work. I try to check the weather or pay a bill online but it's a useless attempt each time. Still, stubborn Mama sits at the computer and Lucas wants to sit in my lap to check out the Thomas website. Who knows which part he'll want to watch today, as he's now become pretty bored with it or just particular about which section he wants to explore. We listen to our favorite song SEVERAL times as he shimmies in my lap and we look at each other and smile and sing. Sometimes I open a new tab so that I can sneakily check email or read a friend's blog, but he doesn't always like that. He does like looking at blog pictures, though.
8:45 a.m. - Turn on Thomas DVD but he pays attention for all of 2 minutes. I turn on a music CD instead. We stack blocks, point to the ceiling fan and lights, sort graduated cups, read pop-up and flap books, then Lucas decides to play independently. I go to the kitchen to continue getting stuff done, and Lucas runs in to check up on me and say hello or a some other babblespeak every few seconds. He has some trinket in his hands and is walking around, stopping from play station to station doing his thing.
9:15 a.m. - We usually get layered up and go outside on a walk here. I go to the bathroom one last time, but Lucas's little internal radar seems to always know when I do because he shows up before I've flushed. Once I'm finished, I tear off one square of toilet paper for him to throw into the toilet. He knows that he only gets one, so he's very careful and satisfied with himself afterwards. We go to the fruit/vegetable stand and the dollar store, and just look around as he points to traffic lights, buses and other large vehicles, car wheels, and dogs being walked. Some well-meaning (older) adult asks me whether or not my son is warm enough, even though he has layers underneath his winter coat, a wool hat covering his ears, and is snug inside a BundleMe, shfitzing. I tell her "Yes, thank you." I think she probably meant that I should cover up his face with a blanket, as some others like to tell me to do. I don't allow her to elaborate, as I receive these types of comments even in 60 degree weather and know from talking to other Bay Ridge parents that we're not the only ones. In the drug store Lucas goes crazy over the Valentine's Day balloons floating in the air. I pull them down to his level for him to touch and go ga-ga. We do this until I'm the one now shfitzing, which means that Lucas must be really uncomfortably hot, so we say bye-bye to the balloons and talk about them for a few minutes more as we walk.
10:00 a.m. - Back home. Turn on PBS so that I can have a free moment to get settled. Lucas eats breakfast #2.
10:20 a.m. - Lucas plays in the front porch placing balls of all sizes inside the hammock and transferring them into the metal cart that we use to lug laundry to the laundromat. This is serious work.

10:35 a.m. - Lucas fights another diaper change, although not as long because he's getting tired and accepts the trinket I give him as a distraction.
10:40 a.m. - Back to the front porch to turn the stroller wheels and play with the balls again. He's looking sleepy, so I hand him his blankie and give him a paci. I pick him up and we stare at people passing in the street and at the changing traffic light at the end of our block. We knock on the window to see if someone will look up and say hi.
10:50 a.m. - Drink warm milk, cuddle on the bed, and read same three or four books in the dark, cozy bedroom.
11:00 a.m. - Into the crib and sleeping. All are happy (especially Mama).
6:00 a.m. - Lucas wakes up bright eyed and very perky -- too perky.

We're back...
We're back in Brooklyn after a full week and a long journey home. Sadly, we didn't take enough pictures of some special moments, but here are a few photos and descriptions for your entertainment:
Poor Lucas. He loves dogs but they don't seem to always love him back. In fact, the abuelos' two big dogs were pretty scared of him. Maybe it's because they didn't like him climbing into their cage when we first arrived... The picture below shows Annie being slightly curious about Lucas and then backing away. Patrick was never nearly as daring.
Lucas's latest new interest/skill is spoon-feeding himself. And of course, this often happens at the most inconvenient time, like in the first picture below, when we just wanted to get somewhere fast and put some food in his belly while avoiding a meltdown in the car, but he decides he wants to participate. Oh well. Our loads of laundry are now larger than ever. We're now also pulling out a tarp to put under the high chair.
Hummus face.
Hangin' out with Abuelo. We're BAD, BAD parents for not catching a picture of Lucas with Abuela during her big recovery week.
Speaking of which, Abuela is doing remarkably well. Doing much more than she should be, of course, but healing beautifully. Thanks again to many of you for the well wishes.

New World
There tends to be a pattern to Lucas's behavior after we arrive in a new place. Day one is usually exciting, and Mr. Charming comes out in all of his glory. Day two is wig out day, when it seems that he's saying to us, "Okay, this was fun, but when are we going home?" We've learned that this is the day we need to hold him often and give extra attention until the next day when he settles down a bit more.
In the meantime, this city kid and his parents are experiencing many new things we're not used to, including a dishwasher, laundry/dryer machines, and grocery stores as big as a football field. Since we can probably count on both hands the number of times Lucas has been in a car, he's also finding the rides around town (and facing forward instead of backwards) pretty exciting. And finally, with less sidewalks and freezing temperatures to make our daily strolls more difficult, what else is there to do except hang out at the mall? The culture shock is in full effect...

Silly Mama!
Quick Update
All's well here in the 'Ville. We've had horrible luck with the weather all five times that we've traveled long distances with Lucas, but at least the flights always go better than we anticipate. Lucas slept during the first leg of the trip, had a blast getting out some energy at the Cleveland airport, then was delightful on the second flight. The only regret is that our layover couldn't be longer in order to be able to visit with Uncle R., who works for the Cleveland Browns.
Thanks to those of you who have asked about Lucas's Abuela. She's doing surprisingly well after the mastectomy, and the lymph nodes they removed were cancer-free!
More to come later...

We're off...
We're off to Louisville for a week to help Abuela after her big surgery (taking place right now!) but we'll try to post pictures of our visit when/if there's time...

Here are shots from a couple of weeks ago of Lucas going nutso over bubbles. Check out those fists just going! After Papi officiates at a wedding, he often brings home those little tubes they give out at receptions for the bride and groom's send-off. We'll be sure to pack them, as we've learned on a previous (and very long) plane ride that when everything else has been attempted and you need to pull out all the stops to get a toddler to sit relatively still, bubbles (and stickers) are the way to go.
Music Maker
At our weekly 'Music Together' class.
Lucas's cautious personality usually has him sitting back and clinging to me for the first 10 minutes of class as we observe (the paci is there to help). Then they bring out these percussion instruments, and we're home free for the rest of the hour as he runs around and shakes his booty with colorful hankerchiefs, egg shakers, rhythm sticks, etc. We love it!
